Garage Door Repair vs. Replacement: How to Decide
A garage door that stops working usually needs a part, not a whole new door. But some doors are past the point where repairs are worth it. These are the questions we work through with Wichita homeowners before recommending one or the other.

Quick answer
Repair if the door itself is sound and the problem is a part: a spring, cable, roller, opener or one damaged panel, usually $150 to $400 for a typical visit. Replace if the door is old, rusted, warped or hail-dented across several sections, typically $900 to $4,500 installed in Wichita. Most repairs take one visit.
Option A
Garage Door Repair
Fixing or replacing a specific part: springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, track, opener components or a single damaged section.
Option B
Garage Door Replacement
Removing the old door, track and springs and installing a new door system sized and balanced for your opening, usually with haul-away included.
| Garage Door Repair | Garage Door Replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cost (Wichita) | $150–$400 per visit | $900–$4,500 installed |
| Time on site | Usually one to a few hours | Usually most of a day |
| Door age | Under ~15–20 years and solid | 20+ years, or any age with widespread damage |
| Damage pattern | One part or one section | Several sections, rot, rust-through or warping |
| Parts availability | Springs, cables and rollers fit nearly any door | Needed when matching panels are discontinued |
| Energy use | No change (unless you add weatherstripping) | Insulated door can steady garage temperature |
| Curb appeal and resale | Neutral | A visible upgrade buyers notice |
| Safety features | Can add or fix sensors and reversing | New track, springs and hardware all at once |
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
In most cases, repair is cheaper. Most service calls in Wichita land between $150 and $400, and the most common repair, a broken spring, typically runs $200 to $500 for a pair of torsion springs. A new door starts around $900 for a single non-insulated steel door and runs up to about $4,500 for a double insulated steel door. Wood, carriage-house and custom doors cost more.
| Job | Typical Wichita range |
|---|---|
| Typical repair visit | $150–$400 |
| Spring repair | $200–$500 |
| Cable, drum or off-track repair | $150–$400 |
| Panel replacement (per section) | $350–$1,200 |
| New door installed | $900–$4,500 |
The math changes when repairs stack up. Springs now, a panel next year and rust in the bottom section can add up to the price of a new door.
When is a garage door repair enough?
Repair is the right call when the door panels are in decent shape and the problem is mechanical:
- A broken torsion or extension spring (the door is suddenly very heavy or won't lift)
- A frayed or snapped lift cable, or the door hanging crooked
- A door that came off its track or a bent track section
- Worn, noisy or cracked rollers and hinges
- Opener problems: sensors, remotes, logic board or a stripped gear
- One section dented by a car bumper or a stray ball
These parts are fairly standard, so they can be replaced on almost any residential door. A tune-up helps the rest of the system last.
When should you replace the garage door instead?
Replacement is usually the better spend when the door itself is the problem:
- Rust that has eaten through the bottom of a steel door, or rot in a wood door
- Several sections dented by hail, which Kansas springs bring often (see our hail damage guide)
- A panel is damaged and the matching section is discontinued
- The door is warped, sagging or won't stay balanced even with new springs
- An old single-layer door in an attached garage that gets very hot or cold
Many Wichita ranch homes from the 1950s to 1970s still have original single-pane steel or wood doors, where each repair buys only a little more time. Our new garage door cost guide breaks down what a replacement includes.
What is the average life span of a garage door?
There's no fixed number, but a steel garage door that's maintained can commonly last a few decades. The parts wear out much sooner than the door. Springs are rated in cycles (one open and one close), and many standard springs are rated around 10,000 cycles, which is several years of normal use. Openers often last about 12 to 15 years.
So a 20-year-old door with solid panels may only need springs and rollers, while one with rust and dents is usually a replacement candidate.
Does a new garage door help energy use or resale?
If your garage is attached, the door is the biggest opening in that wall. An insulated door can help keep the garage closer to the house temperature during Wichita's hot summers and cold snaps. Our insulated vs. non-insulated comparison covers the details.
A new door is also one of the most visible upgrades to a home's front, and buyers notice a dented or faded one.
Can I fix a garage door myself?
Some checks are safe: clean and realign the safety sensors, check the lock switch on the wall control, replace remote batteries, check the breaker and outlet, and clear debris from the tracks.
Do not adjust or replace torsion springs or cables yourself. They hold enough tension to cause serious injury. Don't run the door with a broken spring. The red emergency release cord disconnects the door from the opener, but a door with a broken spring is very heavy and can drop. Call (316) 330-0609 instead.
The verdict
Repair when the door is structurally sound and the problem is a spring, cable, roller, track or opener part. Most of these are fixed in one visit for $150 to $400, with an upfront price before work starts.
Replace when the door has widespread hail damage, rust-through, rot or warping, when matching panels are no longer made, or when repairs keep stacking up on an older door.

Questions people ask
How much does garage door repair cost in Wichita?
A typical repair visit runs about $150 to $400. Spring repairs are usually $200 to $500, and you get the price before work starts. See our repair cost guide.
Can I replace just one garage door panel?
Often yes, at roughly $350 to $1,200 per section, if the manufacturer still makes a matching panel. On older or discontinued doors, a match often isn't available, so a new door can be the smarter spend.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Wichita?
Like-for-like door swaps are usually treated as routine. Resizing the opening or changing the framing goes through the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD), and we check before the job.
Is it worth repairing an old garage door?
If the panels are solid, yes. Springs, cables and rollers can be replaced on most older doors. If the door is rusted through, warped or badly dented, the money usually goes further on a new door.
How long does a garage door replacement take?
Most residential replacements are done in a single day, including removing and hauling away the old door.
