Garage Door Cable Repair in Wichita

A door hanging crooked, a cable dangling at the bottom corner or a roller popped out of the track all mean the same thing: the door is no longer supported evenly. We secure it, find out why it happened (often a worn cable, a broken spring or a car bump), replace the damaged parts and rebalance the door so it runs straight.

  • Cables replaced in pairs
  • Door secured before anything is loosened
  • Track, rollers and drums checked

Quick answer

Most garage door cable and off-track repairs in Wichita cost $150 to $400. Replacing a pair of lift cables or resetting a door that slipped off its rollers sits at the low end; new drums, bent track sections and a full roller set push it higher. Most visits take one to two hours.

How much does it cost to replace a broken garage door cable in Wichita?

Most cable and off-track repairs land between $150 and $400. Typical jobs:

Repair What's involved
Replace a pair of lift cables New cables on both sides, set to equal length, door rebalanced
Put a door back on track Secure the door, reseat the rollers, straighten or re-fasten the track
Replace cable drums New drums on the torsion shaft when grooves are worn or cracked
Replace bent track sections New vertical or horizontal track where it's kinked or crushed
Replace rollers New nylon or steel rollers, often done as a full set

We replace cables in pairs because the other side has the same age and wear. If a spring broke and caused the cable to come off, the spring is priced separately (see garage door spring repair). You get the price before we start.

What causes a garage door cable to break or come off?

Cables do the lifting. On a torsion system they wrap around drums at each end of the shaft above the door; on an extension spring system they run through pulleys along the horizontal track. In Wichita we see the same causes over and over:

  • Rust and fraying. The bottom end of the cable sits near the floor, where water, road salt and snowmelt off your car collect. Strands rust and break one by one.
  • A broken spring. When a spring snaps, the cable can go slack and jump off the drum or pulley.
  • A bumped door. Backing into the door or hitting it with a mower bends the bottom section or track, and the cable loses its path.
  • Worn drums or pulleys. Grooves wear down and the cable slips out of them.
  • An obstruction. If the door hits something on the way down and the opener keeps pushing, the cable on one side goes slack.

Many 1950s to 1970s ranch homes around College Hill, Riverside and Crown Heights still have extension spring doors, where the cable runs through pulleys that wear out with the springs. Newer doors in Andover, Maize and Bel Aire usually have torsion springs with drums.

Can I open a garage door with a broken cable?

Please don't. With a cable broken or off the drum, one side of the door is unsupported. The door can drop, twist in the opening, bind in the track or fall out of it entirely. Running the opener makes it worse and can bend the top section or strip the opener gear.

What to do instead:

  1. Stop using the opener and unplug it.
  2. Keep people and pets out from under the door, and don't try to lift it by hand.
  3. Leave the car where it is if it's inside and the door won't open evenly. If you need it urgently, call us and we'll prioritize the visit.
  4. Don't pull the red emergency release cord on a door that's hanging crooked. That cord disconnects the door from the opener, and on a door with a broken cable it can let the door fall.

If the door is stuck open overnight, see emergency garage door repair.

Can I fix a garage door cable or off-track door myself?

Cables connect directly to the spring system, and on torsion doors the cable is under the full tension of the springs. Loosening a drum set screw on a wound spring can spin the drum and shaft with enough force to cause serious injury. Do not adjust or replace cables or torsion springs yourself.

There are safe things you can check before calling:

  • Look at both bottom corners. A cable hanging loose or a roller outside the track tells us what to bring.
  • Clear anything from the track and floor that might be in the door's path.
  • Note whether you heard a loud bang (often a spring) before the door went crooked.
  • Take a photo of the door and both sides of the track. It helps us quote accurately.

Leave the rest to us.

What happens on a cable or off-track repair visit?

First we make the door safe. We clamp it in place so it can't move, then release tension in a controlled way before touching any cable. Next we look for the cause, not just the symptom: a frayed cable, a cracked drum, a bent track, a broken spring or a worn roller.

We replace the damaged parts, reseat the rollers in a straight track, set both cables to equal tension so the door sits level, and rebalance the springs. Then we run the door by hand and with the opener, check the force settings and test the safety reverse.

If the bottom section is crushed or the door has multiple bent panels, repairs may not hold. We'll show you what we found and price panel replacement or a new door so you can compare. Our repair vs. replacement comparison covers how to decide.

Garage Door Cable & Off-Track Repair questions

How much does garage door cable repair cost in Wichita?

Most cable and off-track repairs cost $150 to $400, depending on which parts failed and whether track or drums also need replacing.

Should both cables be replaced at once?

Yes. Both cables are the same age and carry the same load, so the second one is usually close behind. Replacing them as a pair also keeps the door level.

Why did my garage door come off the track?

Usually a broken cable, a broken spring, a bump from a car or a worn roller. We find the cause so it doesn't happen again.

Is it safe to use the door with one cable hanging loose?

No. The door is unbalanced and can drop or twist. Unplug the opener and keep people away from it until it's repaired.

Can a bent track be straightened?

Minor bends can sometimes be straightened and re-fastened. Kinked or crushed sections are replaced, because a bent track will keep throwing rollers.
